Al-Kadhimiya is a sacred place for the locals as well as the tourists as it contains the tombs of seventh Shia'I Imam Musa Al-Kadhim and the ninth Shia'I Imam Muhammad al-Jawad. Inside the mosque, you can also find the tombs of renowned historical scholars, Shaikh Mufid and Shaikh Nasir ad-Din at-Tusi. The mausoleum is framed on three sides by tarimahs. Tarimah Quraysh is the western tarimah. Eastern tarimah will grab your attention at first sight as it holds a ceiling decorated with epigraphical texts and the southern covered with mirror mosaics will make you fall in love with its charm. The area near the tombs began to be inhabited by the locals who were firm believers of the two Imams. People began to reside around the place to protect the two shrines and giving lodging facilities to the tourists.
In the present time the building comprises of an enclosure that houses the burial chambers of the two Imams and a beautiful mosque. The entrance to the mosque is huge and magnificent. It features two gilded and fascinating bright domes carved on circular drums. Four striking minarets coated with gold also form a part of the entrance. As you move inside the place, you can see four small gold plated minarets. The gold plated gate of the shrine will entice you with its beauty. Galleries and cloisters of the mosque have beautiful interiors owing to the magnificent display with ceramic tiles. These ceramic tiles are carved and designed with beautiful geometric patterns and foliage engravings. Kufic verses decorate the tiles with their beauty. The entire area is decorated with extraordinary mirror work and precious metalwork of gold and silver.
