Antwerp Zoor or ZOO Antwerpen in Dutch is a zoo in the center of Antwerp, Belgium. This zoo is located beside the railway station of Anwerpen-Centraal. Antwerp Zoo is the oldest animal park in Belgium and also is the oldest zoo in the world. This zoo was established on July 21st, 1843. This zoo covers lots of species and exhibits. Some of them are Vriesland, Aquaforum with California sea lions, Reptile House, A Renovated Aquarium that has been there for more than a century, Nocturama with tamanduas, aardvarks, night monkeys, two-toed sloths, armadillos, lesser mouse-deer, slender lorise, Philippine mouse-deer, rakalis, and also Egyptian fruit bats, African buffalos, Aviaries along with the bird house, Egyptian temple, Hipptopia, and many others.

The dolphinarium of this zoo is also called the Aquaforum. In here, you could see California sea lions. Previously, this place was a place for housing bottlenose dolphins. However, in 2002, this attraction was refunctioned to be an aquaforum. The two dolphins were then relocated to Germany and were housed in Duisburg Zoo. The relocation of the dolphins were based on the new national standards for not exhibiting animals in a shallow and small infrastructure.
Then, there is Nocrutama. In Nocturama, you could expect to see tamanduas, aardvarks, night monkeys, two-toed sloths, lesser mouse-deer, slender lorises, Philippine mouse-deer, rakalis, and also Egyptian fruit bats.
This Antwerp Zoo's attraction was once renovated in 2005 to provide better place for many reptiles to live. The reptiles that you could find in this reptile house are turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, and caimans. You could even find those reptiles in many kinds or breeds.
You don't like reptiles? Well, you could go to bird house and aviaries then! This zoo has a wide range of birds in the bird house and aviaries. There are lots of bird species there. Some of the species are Australian magpies, Congo peafowl, toucans, touracos, military macaws, as well as pheasant.
Then, there is vriesland. In this attraction, you could find Gentoo penguins and king penguin rockhoppers. Besides, there are also many sea otters that live in this Vriesland. The zoo has a policy of replacing the dead sea otters with surplus seals.

Some of the monkey species are owl-faced monkey, guereza, emperor tamarin, javan lutung, golden-headed lion tamarin, black-headed spider monkey, Black lemur, Ring-tailed lemur, mandrill, and pygmy marmoset. Meanwhile, in the ape house, you could find western lowland gorilla, chimpanzees, and the world's only eastern lowland gorilla living in captivity outside of Africa.
How to Get Tickets?
The ticket of the zoo comes in a couple of types: 1-day ticket and group ticket. Either way, you could purchase the ticket with the same procedure. You could purchase the ticket directly at the ticket counter in the zoo premise or you could make a money transfer. If you choose to buy the ticket at the park or at the zoo's entrance, you could pay the ticket with cash money, credit or debit card (Mastercard, Visa, Diners Club, American Express).
How To Get Around?
To get around the museum, you could use your own bicycle and steps. However, bicycles and steps are not allowed to be ridden on the entrance plaza. By carrying bicycles and or steps, you are responsible in case of loss of theft of it. The Zoo's officials are not in charge of any depository obligation.
What Should I Wear?
The zoo officials set a special rule about how the visitors should dress when visiting the zoo. Based on the Act of 1 June 2001, the visitors are prohibited to wear clothing that largely or completely hide face. The prohibition of clothing is applied on the zoo's entrance plaza. Generally speaking, you should wear appropriate clothes that will not cause any offence to other visitors and any disturbance to the animals.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit this zoo is surely in the morning. As this zoo opens at 10.00, it is better to start visiting it once it is opened. This is recommended as you could join many programs of the zoo if you could visit early. Some of the programs offered by the zoo are Sunrise over the coral reef (at 10 am), Keeper talks in the buffalo Savanna (at 11.15 am), sea lion presentation (at 13.15 am),and great apes keeper talks (at 13.45 pm).
Will I Need a Guide?
You could choose to explore the zoo with a guide or not. Should you need one, you will be charged a certain amount of money for the guide. For a regular tour, you will be charge € 50.00 for one guide. This guide is intended for 25 persons only. Then for a backstage tour, you will be charged € 75.00 per guide that is intended for 20 persons. Meanwhile, if the visiting group if for youths, you will be charged none as long as the participants are not more than 15 people. You may need a guide if you wish to have a guided tour. This guided tour usually lasts for 1 hour, while the backstage one lasts for 1.5 hours.
How To Get There?
You could get to the zoo by your own car. However, the smartest and easiest way to get there is by taking train. If you wish to travel there with a car, you could park your car in some car parks provided there. The car parks are all in walking distance to the zoo. The parking station of the zoo is called Parking Station ZOO (which is formerly called NOVA) and also Parking Breidel.
This zoo is located in LEZ or low emission zone that was reinforced by the city of Antwerp as of February 1st, 2017. This is meant to enhance and maintain the quality of the air. Since then, the vehicles that are too polluting to the city will be banned from entering the city center.
