Artis zoo not only gives you a glimpse of life on earth but takes you to outer space too. It has a dome measuring 628 meters that let you explore the outer world. There are numerous shows that run each day in the planetarium taking you to the fascinating world. Learn about the planets, latest discoveries in space, adventures of an astronaut, etc. You can pick a show that you wish to see. However, please note that all the shows are in Dutch.
The aquarium at Artis zoological garden gives you insights of the beautiful and exotic marine life. Learn about the diverse variety of aquatic animals. Besides the numerous aquatic tanks found in the main hall, you can also explore the Amazonian rainforest and visit the tropical coral reefs. There is also an Amsterdam canal for an authentic Amsterdam experience.
Head for an incredible experience at the Butterfly Pavilion, the colorful zone of butterflies. The 1000 meter square area is home to thousands of birds that fly freely around. Enjoy the beautiful mix of colors with a vast variety of butterflies ranging from Zebra striped butterflies to the ones with tiger-like markings, the bright red and pinks, and the fascinating palm-sized Blue Morphos.
How to Get Tickets?
There are entrance tickets to the Zoo which can be bought at the zoo gate or online to evade standing in long queues in addition to saving a Euro. Children up to two years are given free admission and there are discounted rates for those between 3 to 17 years. Also, please note that there is a separate ticket for Micropia which can be bought along with the ticket to zoo. If you have Amsterdam city Card, then you are eligible for free admission.
How To Get Around?
The zoo spread on an area of around one kilometer has numerous offerings for its visitors. However, the paths are quite confusing, and you may get lost. Hence it would be great to take a map along (available at the ticket office) that would guide you through the zoo and save upon your time. What Should I Wear?
ARTIS Royal Zoo is a public zoo with no dress code. You can wear anything while going to the place. Comfortable casuals like chinos, shorts, and t-shirts will be best-suited for the place. Wear comfortable footwear as there would be a lot of walking involved.
Best Time to Visit
Artis zoo is open every day. You can visit it between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from November through February, and between 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from March to October. During June, July and August the zoo is open from 9:00 am to sunset every Saturday. Autumn has pleasant weather while summer which is warm is the peak season for tourists. If you love cool climate then spring season suits you.
Will I Need a Guide?
It would be better to explore the zoo on your own that has numerous offerings for you. Take a map of the zoo along and stroll around at your own pace. Plus, the zoo has a very supportive staff that can guide you through the place and solve all your queries related to the wildlife. However, if you wish, you can always opt for a guided tour.
How To Get There?
Located in the center of the city, the zoo is easily accessible. You can enjoy a walk from the city center to the zoo. It is also accessible by public transportation. The nearest metro station to Artis is Waterlooplein from where the zoo is hardly a 10- minute walk. You can also take a tram ride to the zoo. Take tram 14 if you are coming from Dam Square or Tram 9 from the Central Station. Canal bus is also an option if you wish to navigate Amsterdam waters. Car parking facilities are available at the zoo; hence you can reach there by private car too.
You need to present your valid ID and zoo ticket at the entrance. Also, there is a security check at the entrance gates, where you are expected to cooperate with the staff of the Zoo. While visiting Micropia you can carry only your handbags, all other belongings should be kept in the lockers available. Please note that zoo authorities expect you to not feed the animals or damage its property.
