Due to the difference in elevation between two roads, the elevator was built by Nesim Levi, a Jewish businessman in 1907, in order to facilitate people to have an easy access to the road. He is also a grandfather of Mario Lewi, the France writer who owns best seller books in the world. Previously, those who are living here should climb 166 steps to get to their houses, so the elevator is called 'asansor' by Turkish people. It gives an easiness for people living there. The elevator which is built based on the design of by French and Italian engineers in Marseille is working with the water power before the electricity was used. The place where the elevator was built used to be a stone quarry and the steps were very sharp and it was hard to walk with the older people living there on winter. On the plaque of elevator's door, there is a name of Nesim Lewi written in France and Hebrew in 1907. It is used to give information for people about the person who built the elevator.

The lower entrance of the building is on Mithatpasa Street and the upper entrance is on Sehit Nihatbey Avenue. You can reach this historical building in a 5-minute walk by getting off the bus stop on the Mustafa Kemal Sahil Bulvari by using the public buses to the direction of Balçova, Narlidere and Fahrettin Altay. If you are searching for the closest transportation points, get to Konak Vapur Pier and Konak Metro Station. From Konak Square, you can take taxi and get the elevator in maximum 10 minutes according to the traffic density. Asansor is baout 2 kilometers from Konak Square and it can be reached within 20 minutes by a lovely walk from the beach. For those who are using a private car should pay attention to the minimum parking space at the lower and upper entrance of the building.
