Located near the Black Sea, west of Burgas City, Lake Burgas is the largest natural lake in Bulgaria. This lake is well-known as Lake Vaya which has 27.60 km² area.Since it is near the Black Sea, the water of Lake Burgas contains about 4-11% of salt. Lake Burgas is the home of a lot of species, including 23 fish, 60 invertebrates and 254 bird species (of which 61 are endangered in Bulgaria and 9 in the world). Lake Burgas or Lake Vaya was proclaimed as a protected area by virtue of Ordinance No RD-405 of 4 December 1997. The industrial area of Burgas is the place that separate the lake from the sea. Both of them are separated by a strip of sand.Lake Burgas is surrounded by three lakes: Lake Atanasov to the north of the city, Lake Vaya (also referred to as Lake Burgas) to the west and Lake Mandra on which the Poda nature reserve is situated, is to the southwest.

It is called Mandra Poda because it is a combination of Lake Atanasov and Lake Vaya. Birds are the main and the important treasure of this lake. You can observe the species like the Pygmy Cormorant, White-headed Duck, Ferruginous Duck, Red-breasted Duck, Lesser White-fronted Goose and Corncrake on the complex water. During the winter days, Big flocks of Common Pochard and Tufted Duck are migrating to this lake as well as Whooper Swan and Tundra Swan.
