Officially known as the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai in Marathi, Crawford Market is one of the most famous markets in South Mumbai. It has been named after the first Municipal Commissioner, Arthur Crawford, of the city. The name of the market was further changed to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai after the long persuasion of Mahatma Phule Smarak Samiti's president. Mumbai Police Headquarters are located right opposite to the market. The building of the market got completed in 1869 and was donated by Cowasji Jehangir to the city.
