Almost 25 species can be seen being engaged in many of their natural activities and behaviors which include feeding on ripe fruit or flower nectar and basing in under the sun. the garden is maintained at a temperature of 75 degrees of Fahrenheit which is an optimal temperature for the butterflies to survive. The Detroit Zoo buys almost 250 butterfly pupae from various butterfly ranches located in Central America. The butterflies that are taken are not taken from the wild as the ranches extensively work on the conservation of the butterflies. One of the special activities in the butterfly garden for visitors is Breakfast with Butterflies which allows the visitors to learn more about these colorful winged species. The butterfly garden also makes to be a popular venue for couples at their weddings.

The Polk Penguin Conservation Center at the Detroit Zoo is one of the most popular attractions within the premises. It is an extraordinary center for penguins. Spread over an area of 33,000 square feet with an aquatic area which is almost 25 feet deep and contains as much as 326,000 gallons of water. The visitors can watch an arena of more than 75 penguins belonging ot different four species exploring within themselves in their habitat. The center also features an underwater gallery for the visitors with a huge acrylic glass window with two acrylic tunnels which provide gorgeous views of the birds on the top around and even below and allows the visitors to get nose-to-beak with the birds with charisma. The Polk Penguin Center evokes the visceral and harsh ice world of the poles in a habitat within the premises of the zoo and includes a blast of sea mist and polar air. A sound featuring and cool video depicts the phenomena of iceberg calving in the center as well which makes it look quite dramatic and sends massive cascaded of crashing of ice in the water.
