Built in the year 1931, the Institute is partially a centre of research and science and partially a museum of science. Benjamin Franklin is the source of the name being the Franklin Institute. The premises of the institute also inhibit the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial. The institute has a number of exhibitions, theatre halls, science shows and spots along with technical sports. 1. The Science Centre at the Franklin Institute

This is the most recognized part of the Institute's Centre of Science. The centre is full of things which have been invented and discovered all around the world and mostly focusing on the things discovered by Benjamin Franklin. A collection of the items from the workshop of Wright Brothers is also exhibited here. This collection is the most fascinating collection in the centre.

The planetarium of this range and type is the second in the country after the one in Chicago named the Alder Planetarium. The planetarium was built in the year 2002. Around 40 thousands of pounds of weight of dome made of stainless steel was replaced with the new design of the planetarium. The new dome is light in weight than the earlier one and has a diameter of 18 metres. It also has an advantage for people who have the problem of hearing impairment as it can outfit them as well.

Being the first and the last private National Memorial, it houses the statue of Benjamin Franklin which has been carved in marble and is 20 feet high, the sculptor being James Earle Fraser. The hall of the memorial has a domed ceiling which supports itself on its own and weighs about 1,600 tons. Most of the parts of the hall including the walls, pilasters, cornices and columns are carved in marbles from France, Portugal and Italy. The Pendulum Staircase in the hall displays some of the major collections of the Franklin Institute. Some of the collections of Benjamin Franklin included in the exhibition are his electricity tube, lighting rods, his Electrostatic Generator and much more.

The academy opened in the year 2006 in collaboration with the Franklin Institute and also the Philadelphia's School District to make up an environment for learning science. Classes on technology, science, entrepreneurship, mathematics, research and inquiry are conducted here.
