Visiting Great Barrier Reef Queensland

4.5 (100%) 969 votes

Apart from being a significant part of the cultures and spirituality of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders, the Great Barrier reef is a popular destination for tourists. The Whitsunday Islands along with the Cairns regions of the Reef are where tourism flourished mainly and resulted in an economic boom for the region, amounting to more than AUD$3 billion every year on an average. The Great Barrier Reef is so famous that Google ended up including it in the Underwater Street View 3D in November 2014. Located in the most extensive coral reef system in the coral sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia comprises more than 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands and stretches for approximately 2,300 kilometers or 1,400 miles. It can be viewed from outer space and is now declared as World Heritage Site. According to CNN, it is one of the seven natural wonders in the world while the Queensland National Trust made it the Queensland’s state icon.
