Visiting Grotto dello Smeraldo Amalfi

4.5 (100%) 949 votes

Grotta dello Smeraldo or Emerald Cave is the name given to a cave which is partly immersed in the sea water and is located in Conca dei Marini, Italy. The beautiful cavern remained unknown for many years owing to the absence of any natural opening above the waterline. It was in the year 1932 that Luigi Buoncore, a fisherman by profession discovered the place. The cave got its name from the natural green light which fills the inside of the cavern. The green light is caused by natural sunlight which peeks into the cavern through an underwater passage connecting the saltwater lake with the sea outside. The salt water filters the sunlight, and during this phenomenon, only green wavelength enters the cave. This makes the cave one-of-its-kind in the world and also the most popular tourist attraction of Italy. The magnificence of the cave and its natural beauty is alluring to the eyes as well as the heart of every person who visits the place.

Inside The Cave

Inside The Cave

The cave was a discovery of a fisherman, and since then there has been a significant contribution from this clan for the development of the cave. In the year 1956, the local fishermen created a magnificent underwater nativity scene with some beuatiful statues. A nativity scene is a special exhibition of art objects depicting the birth of Jesus, designed particularly during the Christmas season. The scenes of this display include figures representing the infant Jesus, his mother, and his father. This practice has now become a tradition, and every year a group of scuba divers put down the models of Jesus into the waters along with bunches of colorful fresh flowers.
