The Kandyan Era Murals are housed in 2 chambers and illustrate the stories of the Jataka that have been created to create compassion and inspirational virtues. The other room houses a literary depiction of the battle between Buddha and the defiling factors. The Morden Murals on the walls and ceilings depict the various events which occured in the history of Buddhism in the country. These paintings were done in the years between 1927 to 1946 by Soliyas Mendis. On the ceiling are the gods of the nine planets according to the oriental astrology and the twelve zodiac signs.

The stupa is the best and the most attractive site of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara. The place was built to honor the arrival and the visit of Lord Buddha to the site. The stupa was the place where the Buddha preached to his disciples while he visited the temple site. It has not been yet clear as to who built the temple in the past, however, it has been renovated a number of times. The best part of the temple is the gem-studded throne which is the place where Lord Buddha sat while addressing his sermons.
