1. The History of Lisbon Zoo

Lisbon Zoo was founded in 1884 and was the first park with flora and fauna from Iberian Peninsula. The first facilities were located in the Park of Sao Sebastiao da Pedreira. The founders of the zoo are Dr. Pedro Van Der Laan, Jose Thomaz Sousa Martins and the Baron of Kessler, King D. Fernando II, and zoologist Jose Vicente Barboza do Bocage. The park was then moved to where it is now on 28 May 1905 and was declared an Institution of Public Utility on 12 March 1913. The zoo was awarded with the Gold Medal of the City in 1952 by the City Council. Then, in 1990, the zoo was modernized under a new management policy. The zoo also opened a veterinary hospital in 2008 that was considered as the best in Europe by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

However, plan your agenda well before you decided to join the program, as Wild Saturdays is scheduled from 10.00 to 16.30. The zoo also has suggestion for your visit based on your time availability.

How To Get There?

There are a lot of choices of public transportation that you can use to get to Lisbon Zoo. If you want to go by metro, then take the blue line and stop at Jardim Zoologico. If you want to go by bus take the CARRIS bus routes 701, 716, 726, 731, 746, 754, 755, 758, 768, or 770 and stop at Sete-Rios. If you want to go by rail, the nearest station is Sete-Rios using Sintra line. You can also ride a car or bike and park near the entrance.

Visitors can re-entry the zoo with a valid stamp. During summer, the zoo can be entered until 1 hour and 15 minutes before closing time. While during winter, the zoo can be entered until 30 minutes before closing time.
