Erected in the year 1828, Shaheed Minar was formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument. It is the memorabilia of Major General Sir David Ochterlony who was the commander of the British East India Company. Designed by J. P. Parker, the monument was re-dedicated to the martyrs of Indian Freedom Movement. Renamed as 'Shaheed Minar', it gets illuminated in the twilight and allows the public to visit its top.

It was named to honor the pride of Bengal, the legendary Rabindranath Tagore. Famous for many concerts, live shoes, events, and cultural program, it was the prime source of Bengal entertainment once. Opened in August 1961, it is the central venue for Kolkata Film Festival, Bengali Theater, and other cultural activities.
