The Medeu, (Kazakh: Медеу; Medeu) is an outdoor speed skating and bandy rink. It is located in a mountain valley (Medeu Valley, or the valley of Malaya Almatinka River) on the south-eastern outskirts of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Medeu sits 1,691 metres above sea level. It consists of 10.5 thousand square meters of ice and utilizes a sophisticated freezing and watering system to ensure the quality of the ice. There are surely fun things to do at Medeu.

1. High-Mountain Skating

The ice skating rink Medeu located at the altitude of 1,691.2 meters above sea level is world-known. It was erected in 1972. The ice surface occupies 10.5 thousand sq.m., which allows to conduct contests in skating sport, hockey and figure skating. High-mountain skating rink is beautiful in any weather. You can admire its beauty from the high point to which you will be raised by the popular stairs of ascension built at the flank of hill Mohnatka. From the city it looks just like a slope covered with dense trees, hence it got its name. At the beginning of the last century the monastic grotto was located here. Up to now pilgrims come here and arrange divine worships.

If you come to Medeu in summertime, get ready for some fun activities to entertain you. You will find the ice skating rink transforms into a sports arena with courts for hockey, basketball, mini-football, volleyball, a skate park and a bouncy castle for little kids. This is a really great thing to do at Medeu for your summer holiday.

There are several hiking trails that originate from the Medeu main bus stop. There is access to the Shymbulak Skiing resort from the Medeu cable car station. This involves a 15-20 minute scenic ride above the area's mountain tops and rivers. Kimassar trail is a 2 hour hike to the top of Furmanov Peak, where hikers have access to swinging on iconic wooden swings. Kok-Zhailyau trail is a 3 hour hike, and leads to hot springs with thermal water (the place is equipped with changing booths, tiny thermal water pool and outdoors gym). Shymbulak trail is a 2 hour hike, and leads to Shymbulak Skiing resort.

How to Get Tickets?

Tickets can be purchased on site when you arrive. There will be a ticket booth where you can buy your tickets. Admission ticket is valid only for one session; morning or evening.

How To Get Around?

You can get around Medeu by skiing or walking. Another option is to take the cable car or gondola.

What Should I Wear?

Dress very warmly for winter mountain sports — it's even colder in the mountains than in Almaty, and you'll be closer to the sun, so don't forget to bring sunscreen and polarized sunglasses. Be sure to take along warm clothes. Your warmest coat, boots, hat and gloves will keep you toasty and ready for a magical winter experience. Bring a trusted pair of hiking boots to explore the mountains in any season.

The best time to visit Medeu is during the winter when the mountain is full of snow. It's the best time to ski and it's beautiful.



Will I Need a Guide?

No, it's easy to get around and you can find anything you need on this website. However, if this is your first time skiing you might want to hire an instructor.

How To Get There?

Medeu is a short, scenic taxi ride from Almaty centre (2,500 Tenge). If you don't have your own transport and don't want to hire a car, bus number 6 leaves every half hour in front of the Hotel Kazakhstan and goes up all the way to Medeu along Dostyk Avenue. Alternatively, you can rent a bicycle. It's a good work-out to cycle all the way up. Take 2 hours to get there if you are in average shape.

Medeu opens on weekdays at 12:00 to 23:00 with a pause from 16:00 to 18:00. Entrance is 1,800 T and renting skates will set you back around 1,000 T depending on the duration. Season runs from the end of October to March. Bring your passport, it will be useful.
