The Chapel of Reconciliation

The Chapel of Reconciliation is located on the site of the old Church on the Bernauer Strabe. The church got completed in the year 1894. It is a brick built building designed in the Gothic revival style by the architect Gotthilf Ludwig Mockel. During the second world war, it was damaged to some extent. A deactivated American bomb was discovered in its basement during its reconstruction after the war. The old building was put down and a new buiding was constructed with the rubble of the old one. The chapel seems to unite the ecological modernity with the architectural elegance along with remembrance and it stands as a triumph against the destruction of the original chapel.

The Bernauer Strabe is a street which houses the Memorial of the Berlin Wall and is located between the localities of the mitte and Gesundbrunnen. The street runs from the corner of Prenzlauer Berg to Nordbahnhof. After the construction of the Berlin Wall, the street came into the limelight and became popular for window escaped of apartment blocks in the east of the city down to the road which was on the opposite side. Many people died on the street when the border was enforced at first. In the year 1999, some part of the street was turned into a memorial park which is the Memorial of the Berlin Wall.

The Collections and Archive of the Memorial of the Berlin Wall include the documents, maps, plans, photographs, objects, files, biographical collections, and texts which represent the history of the Berlin Wall. The digital photographs archive consists of more than 13,000 pictures, most of which are wall motifs and range from the past four decades. There are 300 maps and plans in the complete set of topographic maps with border fortifications from the year 1981 on a scale very small i.e. 1:5000. There are also a number of original objects of various origins and types. These include debris and salvaged objects from the blown up relics of the border fortifications, uniforms, equipment, border troops, cultural items and much more.
