Memphis Zoo is the home of more than 3,500 animals that represents more than 500 different species. The zoo that was built on April 1906, has been a major tenant of Overton Park. In 1988, the City of Memphis renovated the land whose master plan was defined by the Overton Park. The total area itself is 76 acres (31 ha), while only approximately 55 acres (22 ha) are developed.

Special attractions to do while at the Zoo: get nose-to-nose with polar bears and splashed by sea lions in the Northwest Passage. Visit giant pandas named 'Ya Ya' and 'Le Le' in China Exhibit Area. Also take in the sights and sounds of Yellowstone National Park at the Teton Trek exhibit,featuring grizzly bears, elk, timber wolves and trumpeter swans. Don't miss the chance to watch the newest exhibits, such as: Zambezi River Hippo Camp, home to hippos, flamingos, Nile crocodiles and other animals along the 1,600 miles of Africa's Zambezi River. If you want to view all the exhibits, it requires a walk of about 2 miles, and three to five hours to see the entire property. However, guided tram tours are available for a small fee.

In the zoo, they work to conserve a broad variety of animals, from small toads and spiders, to birds and snakes, to elephants and bears.
