Modern and Contemporary Art

The Modern and Contemporary Art collection is displayed in the Ahmanson building whose entrance is marked by a large staircase called the Rome's Spanish Steps. The base of the staircase is embarked with the massive sculpture, 'Smoke' by Tony Smith. The modern collection is largely populated by the works of Janice and Henri Lazarof with almost 130 works as their contribution. Paintings by Paul Klee, Picasso and sculptures by Alberto Giacometti, dominate the rest of the gallery.

Collections from China and Korea are housed in the Hammer Building. Other Painting from India and Japan also have a place in the gallery. Famous artworks of the gallery include the Nataraja, Jain Altarpiece, the Cosmic form of Lord Shiva, Dancing Ganesha, the Bodhisattva and others.

These art pieces are displayed on the second floor, comprising of galleries of art from North, Central and South America. The gallery continues to be one of the largest collections of the art of Latin America with more than 2,000 works as generous donations received.
