National Gallery of Arts is a national art museum in Tirana, Albania under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. This highly important art institution functions based on the 'Law of Museums' and the 'Law of Art and Culture' of Albania. Develop your taste for Socialist Realism at the National Gallery of Art. The gallery's two floors showcase international works of art, but the highlight is the local communist-era propaganda. Although used to promote a political ideology, each piece has artistic value, making the exhibit both an exploration in art.

1. The Gallery
The gallery currently houses 4626 artworks and more than 600 registered artists in the archives. The Gallery of Arts is the only national institution that exhibits, conserves, studies, restores, publishes, documents and archives the works of art in the country. Tracing the relatively brief history of Albanian painting from the early 19th century to the present day, this beautiful space also has temporary exhibitions. Downstairs there's a small but interesting collection of 19th-century paintings depicting scenes from daily Albanian life, while upstairs the art takes on a political dimension with some truly fabulous examples of Albanian socialist realism.
2. The Statues
Behind the National Gallery of Arts building, in the backyard, there are a group of statues that remind us of Albania’s communist period. You can see the statue of Lenin without his right arm, two statues of Stalin, a damaged portrait of Enver Hoxha, a figure of a soldier aiming his rifle at something behind him and another figure of a worker raising a pickaxe into the air. Opposite to them, there is a statue of a young female soldier. These statues should not be missed on your National Gallery of Arts tour.
3. The Building
Before getting your National Gallery of Arts tickets, take a look of the building from the outside. The modest-sized building housing the collection is in the city center - surprisingly the architecture is solid 60's modernism, not the concrete brutalism that one would expect of a state institutional building in a Soviet bloc country. You can take a picture of its unique building or pose with it. Don't forget to admire the architecture inside the building once you get your National Gallery of Arts tickets.
