The History of the Chiang Mai Night Safari Zoo
The zoo is originally a piece of African savannah-cross-zoo opened in mid-2005. It was then recreated as one of Chiang Mai's newest and most ambitious projects. Back then, the zoo has more than 200 animals from several continents, but now the zoo houses more than 400 animals from more than 50 different species. The zoo is located the foot of the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and included a large lake surrounded by zoo-like enclosures that let the animals roam freely. Inside, the docile animals can wander up to the tram, but the predators are kept behind security barriers. The safari was developed under controversial circumstances, where it was developed without proper environmental impact studies. It was also facing difficulties in securing animals from Kenya. However, it has become one of the best attractions in Chiang Mai.
This one of the feature attractions in Chiang Mai Night Safari will take you to a journey through the wild African savannas. The savanna is a 2.4-km trail located at the south side of the lake. It is inhabited mostly by herbivores and prey animals, including giraffes, antelopes, lamas, rhinoceros, elephants and various animals from Asia and Africa. The tour of the Savanna Safari will take about 30 minutes using an open-sided tram.
The tour will take you to a 2.4-km tram route at the east of the lake. Different from the savannas, you will go through the heart of the wilderness and meet the predators and rare prey animals. Some of the animals are Bengal tigers, pumas, hyenas, vultures, bears, wild boars, and wallabies. This tour will also take about 30 minutes of tram ride.
This attraction is open from daytime and it can only be explored by foot. The route is around the Swan Lake with the length of about 1.2 km. Don't worry because the lake offers you a nice view.
