Built on the narrow hill, surrounded by three sides of Aere River, the Old Town Bern was a city center in the medieval era at Bern, Switzerland. The structure of this old town is never change since it was built in the 12th until 15th century. Although there was a major fire in 1405, after which much of the city was rebuilt in sandstone, and substantial construction efforts in the eighteenth century, Bern's old city has maintained its medieval character. The Old City of Bern is home to the tallest cathedral in Switzerlandas well as other churches, bridges and a large collection of Renaissance fountains. Besides it has many historical buildings, the Old City was the place of the seats of the federal, cantonal and municipal government. It is a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site since 1983.

This Gothic Catheral is located in the south of the peninsula. Munster Bern's construction was started in 1421 and was finished with the bell tower in1893. The Bell Tower is 100 meters high and is the tallest tower in Switzeland. Besides the tallest Bell Tower, this tower has the biggest bell in Switzerland. In 1611, this bell was start to ring. Today, the bell still rings every day. The interior of this church is large, open and fairly empty. During the iconoclasm of the Protestant Reformation in the early of 15th century, all the art and altars in the cathedral were removed . The paintings and statues were dumped in what became the Cathedral Terrace, making the terrace became a rich archaeological site. The only major pieces of art that left the iconoclasm inside the cathedral are the stained glass windows and the choir stalls.

In 1528 the church was secularized by the reformers and the last two monks at the Abbey were driven out of Bern. In 16th century, the hospital's chief minister was the Pietist theologian, Samuel Heinrich König. In 1829 and 1830, the vicar of the church was the poet Jeremias Gotthelf.
