With its late 19th century architecture, this museum displays all works of the popular painter Giovanni Segantini, Ave Maria Crossing the Lake and Midday in the Alps. The stunning view from the central part of the museum add some values to it.
1. The Architecture
Coming to Segantini Museum, you will be spoiled by its architecture. The central part of this museum is very impressive since the building is positioned overlooking the mountain and facing the St Moritz lake. It points the east side towards Schafberg, where Giovanni Segantini died. Visit the central part while admiring the architecture is the first thing to do at Segantini Museum. The architecture was designed by Nicolaus Hartmann based on the plan of Segantini which had been designed for the world exhibiton in Paris, 1900. The building with great dome looks like a big mausoleum, an imposing and accessible memorial. To celebrate the birthday of Giovanni Segantini, in 1998, the museum had been completed with AC, security system and the other things that are needed by the museum in the new era.
2. The Collection
Another thing to do at Segantini Museum is seeing the collection. Around 50 works of Giovanni Segantini are displayed in this museum. In 1911, this museum bought its first collection and when the fund was enough, it also bought the two side pictures of Alpine Triptych. The museum aslo got the work of Segantini which was displayed in the world exhibition in Paris from the private owner. The three paintings are the main attraction in Segantini Museum: La vita – La natura – La morte (Life – Nature – Death). The other outstanding paintings that you have to see are Ave Maria Crossing the Lake and Midday in the Alps. Besides Segantini's work, you can also see the other artists' works such as Paolo Trubetzkoy, Leonardo Bistolfi and Giovanni Giacometti.
3. The Exhibition
Every two years, Segantini Museum is held an exhibition by collaborating with Kunstmuseum St Gallen. It started in 1999, when they celebrated the birthday of Giovanni Segantini and it continually become a summer exhibition until today. The exhibition features paintings and drawings. The special exhibition will always displays The Works of the Otto Fischbacher/Giovanni Segantini Foundation, Ave Maria – Idyll, Silent Prayer and Symbol, Muse and Model, Giovanni Segantini: Primavera sulle Alpi (Springtime in the Alps) and The Two Mothers. 4. Segantini Museum Guided Tours
The guided tours will help you to know more about the museum and the history behind it. Segantini Museum guided tours are held from 20 May to 20 October and from 10 December to 20 April.
