Jozo-Do Hall of Shohukuji Temple is one of the National Treasure buildings of Japan. Shohukuji Temple is the oldest Zen temple of Eastern Japan. It is famous for its architectural excellence and traditional customs associated with it. The introducer of Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism in Japan, Priest Eisai founded this temple in the 12th Century. There are a few respectful customs in Shohukuji Temple. Like, in the hall there are few racks full of Jizo Statues. Now the tradition is, if someone from the family or friends is sick, a person can take on Jizo Statue home. After complete recovery, the Jizo statue comes back with a new Jizo statue to accompany that statue. The temple is famous for curing illness. The temple is on a large ground with several smaller temples. The Buddhist sculpture can be noticed almost everywhere. There is a Belfry in the compound. Among many Toriis, there is a big torii called Sanmon torii, through which you have to go to Butsuden Hall. A small pond is present with a bridge which you have to cross to reach the hall. The compound of the temple is full of lush green trees. And don't be surprised if you see many cats there. It seems like they are guarding the temple. If you want to spend some time in tranquility and feel the sacred vibes, then you must visit Shohukuji Temple.
Shofukuji Temple- the first Zen Temple of Japan

The pond and the flowers are worth witnessing. You can visit during the summer to attend the 'Flower Festival.' Autumn is also a good time to pay a visit.
Daizenin Temple is of Tendai Buddha. There is a statue of Fudosani and thirty-six daughters. Around the temple, there is a lot of greenery.
It has floating turtles with some fat fishes in a crystal clear pond. Small houses for different purposes, like the tea room, picnic house, etc. You will get to see a lot of pigeons here. Walk around or sit on the benches to spend some time relaxing.
It is a cozy local museum. The place where the museum is now situated was once used for war facilities. Numerous ancient artifacts are stored there. Replicas of famous cultural objects and general excavated things are also present.
Mr. Ken Shimura planted this tree. It was planted in commemoration and is a memorial tree. With time it grew bigger and has now become famous. Local people regard this tree as Sacred.

Morning is the best time to visit the temple because it is a shady temple. It will not be a good idea to visit the temple after dusk.

The nearest railway station is Gion Station. This the best way to reach the Shofukuji Temple. If you get down at Hakata Station, then you have to walk for 15-20 minutes.
