The Sky Tower is a 328 metres observation and telecommunication tower in Auckland that has become an iconic landmark since its opening in 1997
Visit the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere, the Sky Tower
The construction of the Sky Tower was done by Fletcher Construction. The tower was designed by Gordon Moller of Craig Craig Moller architects. The unique shape has given the tower a New Zealand Institute of Architects National Award as well as regional awards. For safety, the tower is designed to be able to withstand wind in excess of 200 km/h and to sway up to 1 metre in excessively high winds. It is also claimed to withstand an earthquake with up to 8.0 magnitude within 20 kilometre radius. The construction took 2 years and 9 months to complete, and the Sky Tower was finally opened for public on 3 August 1997
The Sky Tower only has several levels that can be accessed by public. Those are level 50 for the Sky Lounge, level 51 for the main observation deck, level 52 for the orbit 360° dining, level 53 for the Sugar Club Restaurant, the Skywalk, and the Skyjump, and level 60 for the Sky Deck. One of the most famous restaurants is the only revolving restaurant in New Zealand located in level 52, situated 190 metres above the ground. Every hour, the restaurant will turn for 360°. Orbit offers kiwi-inspired à la carte menu that features the best local and seasonal produce
On Level 51 is the main observation area where you can enjoy 360° panoramic view of the city up to 80 kilometres in every direction. There are also some small sections with glass floor that will let you see right below. Don't worry because the glass is safe as it is as strong as concrete. The highest observation point in Sky Tower is located on level 60 and is known as the Sky Deck. In the Sky Deck, you will see the view through virtually seamless glass. The Sky Deck is smaller, yet it gives a more personal feel than the main observation area
The Sky Tower offers two activities that are definitely not for the weak. The first one is the Skywalk that will let you enjoy more of Auckland's view while walking around a platform of 1.2 metre wide from 192 metres above ground level. To keep you safe, you will be wearing a full body harness and overhead safety lines. The second one does not let you walk, but will let you jump at the speed of 85 km/hour. Skyjump is the highest jump in New Zealand that will give you an unforgettable experience. Both Skywalk and Skyjump are located on level 53, at the same level with the Sugar Club restaurant
The Sky Tower is also known for a school holidays destination. Every school holiday, the Sky Tower puts a different theme for families. The Sky Tower also has an educational program that is fully NZ Curriculum aligned. The program includes Educators' Guide with a complete Lesson plan and a Students Workbook. While for a family event, you can submit your family for a Teddy Bear picnic at Sky Cafe. The picnic will include Sky Tower admission, morning tea, a goodie bag, face painting and other activities
By looking at the Sky Tower at night, you will know what they are celebrating at the moment. On its birthday, the base will be lit by white color and the top will be lit with yellow color to represent a candle. While during Mother's day or Breast Cancer Foundation day in New Zealand, the tower will be lit with pink color. One of the most common colors is red. Red and green for Christmas, red and gold for Chinese New Year, red on top for Cure Kids Red Nose Day, and if it's all red, then it's for Valentine. During earth hour, the lights will be shut down. You can also send a request or send your ideas for the lighting. For complete guide, you can visit the official website of the SkyCity
