The Exteriors

The Exteriors

A simple yet elegant architecture adorning both the interiors as well as the exteriors of the State Capitol make it a perfect spot for embracing beauty. Alluring in all the possible forms, the building is based on the U.S Capitol building which glorifies the city of Washington D.C. A porch extends from the center of the structure which stands on the seven granite archways, and the stunning west entrance ends in projecting bays. Series of eight Corinthian columns are placed alongside the porch. The pediment above is supported by a fascinating horizontal decorative molding depicting Minerva, the Roman goddess, surrounded by education, justice, industry, and mining. Above the flat terrace, you can embrace the two drums which support a dome. The first drum comprises of a row of Corinthian columns whereas the second is made of Corinthian pilasters. Alongside these drum walls, you can see an array of large arched windows making the structure more alluring. There is also a lantern which consists of a smaller dome capped with a decorative gold finial giving it the necessary royal touch.

The Interiors

The Interiors

State Capitol building seats the forty members of the California Senate in a large chamber room which is decorated in bright red color, drawing its reference to the British House of Lords. You can enter this chamber through a corridor in the second floor of the building. Admire the charming gas chandelier which dignifies the coffered ceiling of the chamber. A Latin phrase is beautifully carved on the cornice, and a dais with delicate hand carvings glorifies the structure. A portrait of George Washington and the State Seal hangs on the walls of the building. Corinthian columns form the base for the gallery above. These galleries have dark red curtains which were used to maintain privacy. Behind the rostrum, you can witness the sight of two nice chairs decorated with red velvet cushions which lie in perfect sync with the surroundings. Adorned with green tones, lying opposite to the building is the California Assembly chamber. Along the cornice of the lower house, you can see a quotation from Abraham Lincon. All the elements of this chamber are somewhat identical to the Senate chamber.
