A Memorable Trip to State Capitol
A simple yet elegant architecture adorning both the interiors as well as the exteriors of the State Capitol make it a perfect spot for embracing beauty. Alluring in all the possible forms, the building is based on the U.S Capitol building which glorifies the city of Washington D.C. A porch extends from the center of the structure which stands on the seven granite archways, and the stunning west entrance ends in projecting bays. Series of eight Corinthian columns are placed alongside the porch. The pediment above is supported by a fascinating horizontal decorative molding depicting Minerva, the Roman goddess, surrounded by education, justice, industry, and mining. Above the flat terrace, you can embrace the two drums which support a dome. The first drum comprises of a row of Corinthian columns whereas the second is made of Corinthian pilasters. Alongside these drum walls, you can see an array of large arched windows making the structure more alluring. There is also a lantern which consists of a smaller dome capped with a decorative gold finial giving it the necessary royal touch.
State Capitol building seats the forty members of the California Senate in a large chamber room which is decorated in bright red color, drawing its reference to the British House of Lords. You can enter this chamber through a corridor in the second floor of the building. Admire the charming gas chandelier which dignifies the coffered ceiling of the chamber. A Latin phrase is beautifully carved on the cornice, and a dais with delicate hand carvings glorifies the structure. A portrait of George Washington and the State Seal hangs on the walls of the building. Corinthian columns form the base for the gallery above. These galleries have dark red curtains which were used to maintain privacy. Behind the rostrum, you can witness the sight of two nice chairs decorated with red velvet cushions which lie in perfect sync with the surroundings. Adorned with green tones, lying opposite to the building is the California Assembly chamber. Along the cornice of the lower house, you can see a quotation from Abraham Lincon. All the elements of this chamber are somewhat identical to the Senate chamber.
Located throughout both the wings of the State Capitol, the building is splendidly decorated with exquisite paintings and artworks. Capitol Art Program preserves these paintings in the three sections: the Permanent collection, the Loan collection, and the Contemporary Art collection. More than fifty paintings constitute to form the Permanent collection which includes landscapes, seascapes, still life paintings, and paintings depicting scenes from ordinary life. On the first floor, the visitors can admire a stunning collection of more than a hundred paintings making up the Loan collection section. These paintings are loaned from various individuals and institutions and find their place on the west wing in legislative conference rooms and leadership offices. California's most renowned artists have contributed to the loan collection section including works from Edwin Deakin, William Keith, Thomas Hill, etc. The Contemporary Art Collection program recognizes and houses the best of contemporary art created by artists throughout the state. Every year each Senator selects an artist from his or her respective district and represents their collection in the galleries. You can also see the portraits of California's 36 governors displayed throughout the west wing. Two astonishing murals embrace the galleries of the State Capitol premises.
