Visiting Temple of Apollo Pompeii

Temple of Apollo is the oldest religious building in Pompeii which dedicated to the Greek and Roman god Apollo. The architecture is mixed from Italic elements and Greek such as the elevated podium accessed by a staircase and the colonnade surrounding the cella. The small cella is paved in polychrome mosaic with green and white marble and slate bordered by three bands and the outer was decorated with a meander design. The temple has a peripteros 48 Ionic colomns and the floor is made of colored diamond-shaped stones, giving the illusion of cubes. The building was damaged by an earthquake in 62 AD and the shrine is rebuilt and get the another reconstruction in a 2nd-century BC.

1. The continuous colonnade

The continuous colonnade originally features with 2 storeys but in the restored after 62 AD, the second storeys was omitted. No remains of the upper gallery have been found. The colonnade was built of tufa and coated with white stucco. It is contains with 48 columns. After the earthquake the columns was changes from Ionic to Corinthian with a plenty layer of stucco and a frieze of griffins.

Here you can see the high podium where is the temple stands on which feature with broad flight of stairs. The podium is the raised platform which the columns and cella of a Roman temple stand. See the polychrome mosaic composed of green and white marble and slate bordered by three bands in the small cella. The role of cella itself as the central room of the temple where the image of the deity placed.

If you go to the top of the Ionic column to the left of the stairway you can see a meridian or sundial. This is presumably from the Augustan age. Here also you can see the two bronze statues in the sacred precincts, but those are the copies of the originals. The statues is the Apollo with Bowand Diana even it is only the copies its still placed in the originals were found. If you want to see the originals it is now in the National Archeological Musem of Naples..
