If you wish to avoid crowds, then plan a trip early morning but the best view is at night with the street illuminated and crowd swarming in the city. Major attractions get closed by the midnight thus if you are planning to visit one do cross-check its closing time. New Year's Eve is definitely the best time to visit the square and celebrate the New Year.
