Ravello also known as the city of music is a beautiful and alluring city in Italy. Amongst its various gems, Villa Rufolo takes pride in being the center of attraction of all the heritage sites. Describing the scenic beauty, the archeological richness and the perfect calmness of Amalfi, the beautiful Villa Rufolo stands tall in the iconic town of Rovello. The structure dates back to a period of the thirteenth century. But later in the nineteenth century the building underwent revamping and remodeling. Rufolo family was the original owner of Villa Rufolo. Later the ownership passed to the Confalone, Muscettola, and d'Afflitto byinheritance. The views of the villa will leave you in surprise with its mystifying design, the artistic architecture, and the fascinating gardens surrounding the villa. If you are planning to visit Italy in your next holiday then don't forget to include Villa Rufolo in your itinerary or else you will miss an opportunity of a lifetime.
A Trip to the Villa Rufolo
Your journey of the villa begins from the entrance gateway, Torre d'Ingresso, which is quite decorative and charming. On top of the entrance, is a dome with an umbrella ribbing. The dome is adorned with interlocking arches and is supported by terracotta columns. Inspired by the Gothic architecture its pointed arch is decorated with strands of yellow and grey tuff. To highlight the intricate designing of the dome, it was brushed with a transparent straw color pigment made from ceramic enamel powder. A statue of a human figure stands at the four corners depicting the four seasons of the year.
La Torre Maggiore is the beautiful and the taller of the two towers exhibiting the Villa Rufolo. It stands tall with a height of thirty meters and is divided into three floors. It serves as the oldest part of the whole complex and is a symbol of the social, economic, and political strength of the Rufolo family. Owing to its excellent height the tower gives its visitors some of the most enchanting views over and above the mountains and the sea.
The villa adorns itself by the presence of two gardens, the upper garden, and the lower garden. The upper garden finds its place in the east while the lower garden is placed in the Belvedere. In between the two gardens is the picturesque partition which is solely devoted to the purpose of organizing events like the Ravello Festival. It has a huge stage which spreads over the sea. The stage is created every year at the onset of the festival. When you move towards the northern side of the garden, you will come across the remains of the Balnea, a bathing site which was discovered in the recent excavations. The stairs of the 'lover garden' will lead you to the Turkish bath, Bagno Turco, the remains of which are still preserved in the villa. As you cross the garden, you will find yourself at the lowest level of the complex, the Cellars of the villa. The southwestern part of the cellars now serves as a theatre.
Ravello welcomes its visitors with open hearts to come and cherish the rich history which dates back to a period undefined, a mountaintop which resides in Italy's most enchanting coastline, and captivating views which have enticed countless souls, inspired artists and filled millions of hearts with passion and love. The medieval streets, the alluring garden villas, and the ancient stone pathways all mark as the predominant features of the city. It proudly holds the Villa Cimbrone, the fascinating Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer and a vibrant and colorful cultural heritage which breaths in the city and which reflects its presence through the Ravello Festival and the Ravello Concert Society. The lovely city inherits peace and serenity from its small population and the peaceful ambiance. Located in the hills above Amalfi, Ravello gives its visitors numerous jaw-dropping sights of the Meditteranean. Gardens sprawling the city are full of pleasantly scented flowers which will teleport you to a magical illusionary world.
