The Whitney Museum of American Art popularly referred to as Whitney is an institution which focuses on the contemporary modern art of the twentieth-century by living artists. It is home to more than 21,000 paintings, sculptures, artifacts, photographs, videos and films by more than 3000 renowned artists. Established in 1931 it is one of the oldest art museums in its country. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the mastermind behind this innovation is a sculptor who wanted to showcase the American art to the entire world to help talented artists with financial issues. This led to the opening of her studio in 1914 where she displayed artworks of some artists. It took her years to collect art from all over the country that resulted in the foundation of the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1930, and it was opened in 1931 in Greenwich Village. It is the first museum to establish its branches in other parts of the surroundings. Whitney had around over 600 works in her works which grew to 21,000 works. It made a huge contribution to the art industry from the day it was established. Many artists rose to fame and made a living after Whitney became an art patron. The museum was shifted to new locations two to three times, finally, on April 30, 2015, ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Michelle Obama was held, and the museum was opened the next day.
