Visiting Woodland Park Zoo Seattle

Spread over an area of 37 hectares, the zoo has numerous exhibits and spaces for public and receives over 1 million visitors each year. The zoo is open every day and is also counted as the member of AZA. Almost 1,090 specimens of animals are housed in the premises of the zoo along with 7,000 trees. Some of its major exhibits include the Tropical Rain Forest, the African Savanna, the Northern Trails and many more.

This exhibit begins with a walkway which will take you to a building which was started in the year 2003. Just beside the exhibit is the tent of a researcher of a jungle. In the main building, there are animals from South and Central America which include colobus monkeys, gorilla, red ruffed lemurs, poison arrow frogs, toucans and many more. There are numerous tropical birds in the exhibit as well. The loop outside the rain forest of Africa also includes tamarins, ocelots, bushmasters etc.

Combination of the two words Gymnasium and Zoo is an area meant mainly for children which they can use as a play area. Space is interactive and has many play spaces which are based on the theme of nature. There are a number of programs conducted for the children in the open area. A desk named Nature Exchange is also inhibited in the premises of the play space. The roof of the space is covered in native plants. The space was considerate to make children active and empower them with energy.

The exhibit has been set up into a village of Africa and the visitors can enter it. There are many elements combining the effect of the theme and culture of the African Village along with humans and animals in the landscape. The major animals housed in the African Savanna are zebras, ostriches, gazellas, giraffes, oryxes, patas monkeys and hippopotamus. In the summer months, the people visiting the zoo are allowed to feed the giraffes with their hands for a nominal fee at some fixed times. Besides that, there are two carnivore exhibits which includes African warthogs and Southeast African Lions.

Animals from Asia's, South America's and North America's temperate regions are covered in this exhibit. Some of its major birds are Pheasants, Hornbills, Southern Pudus, Chilean Flamingos, Cranes and many more. The main animal featured in the exhibit is Red Panda. This exhibit also focusses on the breeding of the featured animals so as to spare them from extinction or getting endangered.

There are two major exhibits named as the Trail of Vines and the Banyan Wilds. A number of endangered species are featured here. Some of the main features of the exhibit include Siamangs, Indian Pythons, Lion-tailed Macaques, Sloth bears, Orangutans, Malayan tigers, Small-clawed Asian otters along with numerous birds of the Asian region.

The latest exhibit that the zoo came up with is the exhibit of the penguins which was started in the year 2009 in the month of May. It covers an area of 1,600 metre squares and uses green energy or geothermal power to operate. There are a number of pools and cliffs housed in the exhibit to create a natural habitat for the penguins.
