The Ford African Rain Forest established in the year 1889, is a landmark of the Atlanta Zoo. The African Rain Forest mainly exhibits gorillas. Twenty-one gorillas have been born in the zoo from the day it has opened. The star attraction of this exhibit is the rare set of twin gorillas named as Kali and Kazi. The zoo has six offsprings of the Willie B , which were born in the year 1889. They are Macy B, Andi, Anaka, Mijadala, Gunther, and Merry Leigh. In the year 2004, the zoo has extended 'The Living Tree House'. The Ford African rainforest also exhibits a wide range of African birds, ringed-tail lemurs, drills, black and white ruffed lemurs, monkeys and many more.

2. Boundless Budgies: A Parakeet Adventure

It was opened in April 2009 to provide shelter for free flying parakeets. The visitors are allowed to hand-feed the free flying parakeets. This exhibit is closed permanently in November 2016 for development.

This section was opened in the year 2010. Trader's Alley: Wildlife's Fading Footprints ensures the protection of wildlife species which are traded internationally. It exhibits the collection of bush dogs, raccoon dogs, fossa, Malayan sun bears and binturong.

4. The World of Reptiles

The world of reptiles has more than four hundred and fifty reptiles and amphibians with over one hundred species. This section is maintained and managed by the herpetology department of the zoo. It exhibits turtles, snakes, frogs, lizards, toads, tortoise, salamanders, black mamba, spider tortoise, king cobra, python, American alligator, copperhead, bog turtle, water moccasin and many more.

5. Asian Forest

This section displays the forests of Asia and exhibits giant pandas, red pandas, Komodo dragons, giant otters, Sumatran tigers and more. In the year 2007, it launched a project named 'The Orangutan Learning Tree Project' for the visitors which allows orangutans to engage in problem-solving exercises on a computer, while visitors can easily observe their activities on a linked monitor.

The best time to visit Atlanta zoo is from the month of March to May as the weather offers the mild and pleasant climatic conditions. The timings for the zoo are 9:30 am to 5:30 pm from Monday to Friday but for Saturday and Sunday timings are 9:30 am to 6:30 pm.

How To Get There?

You can reach Atlanta by car, train, airplane, or bus. If you are traveling within the country then you can reach the city by metro, bus or car. The Atlanta zoo is just 8.3 miles away from the nearest station of the city. And if you are from abroad then you need to book the tickets for the flight to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Once you reach the Atlanta Airport, the further journey can be done by city transport. The zoo distance from the airport is 9.6 miles only.

The visitors are requested not to bring balloons, straws, glass container or alcohol in the zoo premises . The Atlanta zoo provides a nicotine-free surrounding. Therefore, smoking is strictly prohibited in the zoo. You are allowed to take the cameras inside the zoo but the snapshots are restricted at certain areas. You are allowed to take food items and drinks inside the zoo. There is a picnic area in the kid's zone which offers the visitors to sit and enjoy, without paying any extra money.
