The foundation stone of the 'temple of art” was laid in 1885 in Jefferson Avenue. The museum soon became very popular and also gathered a huge collection in no time. The design of the building was given life under the guidance and supervision of the famous architect, Paul Cret. The museum was then shifted to the Woodward Avenue in 1927. Beaux Arts Building is another name for the museum.The museum has more than 100 galleries inside it, an auditorium of 1150 seating capacity, an art library, and a conservation services laboratory. It has a collection of nearly 66,000 works. Some of the classic paintings in the museum include Detroit Industry of Diego Rivera, and Self- Portrait by Van Gogh. The DIA has a diverse collection which includes American, European, Modern and Contemporary, Islamic, African, Asian works.

Fair Lane was the abode of Clara and Henry Ford, which was just a dwelling place for them and is now a place that inspires the world. The premises were donated to the University of Michigan. As of now, the Fair Lane is under renovation, and the project would not be completed anytime before 2020. Though the authorities organise workshops for the visitors. The museum is closed on Mondays. The grounds and visitor centre can be explored from 9 am to 6 pm on Tuesday to Saturday. Sunday timings are from 11 am to 6 pm. The general house tour tickets as well as the premium tour tickets, are sold on a first come, first served basis.
