Shwedagon Pagoda, also named as Golden Pagoda or the Great Dagon Pagoda is a 99 metres long stupa which is located on the Hill Singuttara, towards the west of the Lake Kandawgyi. It is considered to be one of the most sacred and holy pagodas of the Buddhist Culture. The main attractions of the spot which cause the place to be considered the holiest are the hair strands of the Lord Gautama and also a tiny piece of Kassapa's robe. The Triple Gem, Jade Buddha, the Tharrawaddy Min Bell, a mythical well, the Singu Min Bell are some of its other major attractions. The nearby market area is also very much visited by the people visiting the pagoda.
Bagyoke Market which was previously called as the Scott's Market and now referred to as the Bogyoke Aung San Market has the architectural style of the Colonial Times and the streets made of cobblestone. Most of the shops in the market place focus on selling clothes, art works, antique jewellery, handicraft collections and other cultural items. The market is also famous for its black foreign currency exchange point. Other items like food, medicines, garments, foreign goods are also sold in some of the shops. The market place is inhibited in two floors and was opened in the year 1926. The market remains closed on Mondays. One of the food items that can be looked forward in the market include fried noodles.
Maha Bandula Park also referred to as Maha Bandula Garden is open to public and is spread over an area of 3 hectares. A statue of the Queen Victoria has been placed right in the centre of the park. The park has been renamed several times due to several sentiments prevailing amongst the people of the city. The name Bandula has been given due to the national sentiments of the people towards the park. The park is surrounded by a few other attractive spots of the city which include the Yangon City Hall, the High Court and the Sule Pagoda.
Yangon Zoological Gardens or simply the Yangon Zoo is considered to be one of the most largest and oldest zoos of the country. The zoo is spread over an area of 28 hectares and houses around 1100 animals of 200 species. The zoo also comprises of an aquarium, a natural history museum, an amusement park and picnic area. There are almost 60 types of mammals, 67 types of birds and 18 types of reptiles in the zoo. The zoo also has a number of trees which include palm trees, coconut trees, bamboo, grass, vines, shrubs and other seasonal flowers and fruit trees. The zoo conducts a number of performances by the animals.
Kandawgyi Park also referred to as the Kandawgyi Nature Park of Kandawgyi Garden is one of the most famous centres of the town which is known for the purpose of entertainment and recreation. The park houses a Kandawgyi Lake which is its major attraction. There are a number of playgrounds and areas for picnics in the park where the families can sit and relax and children can play and enjoy. The park is filled with numerous trees and flowers which make it look colourful and beautiful. Many festivals are also celebrated in the park.
Sule Pagoda is a stupa of the Burmese and is believed to be built around 2600 years before, even older than the Shwedagon Pagoda. The stupa has been considered as a heritage site as well. The stupa marks the cityscape and the skyline of the city with its tall and height. The architecture features of the stupa have been picked up from the South Indian structure style. The stupa is believed to be holding a hair strand of Buddha.
